Amara was born in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis — the 'Little Mogadishu' corridor along Cedar Avenue — to a Senegalese father who drove buses for Metro Transit and a Vietnamese-American mother who ran a nail salon on Nicollet Mall.
