Okay, but here's the thing nobody talks about: the BC Wildfire Service just issued a **Fire Danger Rating of "Extreme" for the entire Okanagan Valley**, effective 09:00 PDT today, July 23, 2024. This isn't just a high alert; "Extreme" means new fires will start easily, spread rapidly, and be very difficult to control. You know what that means for us, with the hillsides around Black Mountain and Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park. We've seen this before, and it’s serious. The fire danger rating is based on real-time data from weather stations across the region, including the one near Kelowna International Airport.
What "Extreme" Fire Danger Means:
* **No new open fires are permitted**, including campfires, category 2 and 3 open fires, and fireworks. This has been confirmed by the City of Kelowna's Fire Department through a release issued at 08:30 PDT this morning.
* **Increased patrols by BC Wildfire Service** are expected in areas like the Mission Creek Greenway and the Kettle Valley Rail Trail.
* **Evacuation planning is being reviewed** by the Central Okanagan Regional District. This is standard procedure, but it highlights the gravity.
We're heading into what feels like the fifth Okanagan season — smoke season — earlier than usual this year. Please, be extra vigilant. One spark can change everything out here. Pack a go-bag, know your evacuation route, and make sure your yard is fire-smart, especially if you live near the wildland urban interface in areas like the Upper Mission or Wilden.
