Your Carman hospital shut down surgeries for what? Ants?

Your Carman hospital has ants, seriously?

Morning from the Central Plains — here's what's moving through Portage today. You might have seen the news floating around about Carman, south of us, having to shut down surgeries at their hospital. Not for staffing issues, not for equipment, but because of an "ant problem." Southern Health RHA confirmed it. I read that and immediately thought about the amount of grain and processing plants we have running out here in Portage la Prairie, just north of the Assiniboine. It makes you wonder about the pest control budgets.

This isn't just a funny story you chuckle at over coffee down at Tim Hortons on the Trans-Canada. It speaks to something practical, something about maintaining the infrastructure we rely on. We've got Stride Place, our own hospital, the processing plants — Simplot, McCain — they're all massive operations that need constant upkeep. If a hospital in Carman can get overwhelmed by ants, what does that say about the daily grind of keeping everything running in our region?

* **Impact on Services:** Carman residents now have to travel for surgical procedures, putting more pressure on nearby facilities, potentially including ours in Portage.

* **Preventative Measures:** It's a reminder for all our local institutions, from the Fort la Reine Museum to the Portage Mall, about the importance of routine pest management.

* **Regional Health:** The RHA is stretched as it is. Issues like this, while seemingly small, tie up resources and personnel that could be focused on other critical services.

It's a stark reminder that even the most modern facilities need constant vigilance against the small things. For residents here in Portage, it’s a good moment to appreciate the folks keeping our own facilities, from the hospital to the co-ops, running smooth and pest-free. We feed the province, and we need our infrastructure sound.
