Irving Oil's diesel leak in Saint John: Are you surprised?

SHARE

Good morning from the Fundy shore — the tide's turning, and so is New Brunswick. Let's get into it.

### Your coffee just got a little more expensive, right?

You know, sometimes you think you’ve seen it all with the Irvings, and then something like this pops up. Irving Oil is facing charges because a service station, somewhere around Saint John, mind you, was leaking diesel for a while before anyone caught it in December 2024. And not just a little drip, eh? The province’s investigation says it was happening over a “period of time.” I'll tell you what, that's not just a spill, that's a slow-motion environmental headache for the Bay.

Now, we all know Irving is woven into the fabric of this city, from the refinery glow on the west side to the offices uptown. You can't throw a rock in Saint John without hitting something with their name on it, right? But when a leak like this goes on for a while, it makes you wonder what’s really trickling down into our environment. It’s not just about the fine they'll face; it’s about what it means for the water we drink and the air we breathe, especially with the harbour right there.

#### What This Means for Saint John

* **Environmental Impact:** A diesel leak, even a slow one, can do real damage to soil and groundwater. We live on the Fundy, and protecting that coastline is paramount.

* **Trust in Oversight:** It raises questions about how regularly these facilities are inspected and monitored, not just by the company, but by provincial regulators.

* **Local Economy & Perception:** While Irving is a huge employer, incidents like this don't exactly help the city's image as we try to attract new folks and businesses.

It's a "very Saint John" story, this one. We're a port city, an industrial city, and with that comes a certain give-and-take. But the "take" shouldn't be a prolonged diesel leak. For those of us who live by the water, whether it's uptown looking down King Street to the harbour, or out in Lorneville, these things hit a little closer to home. We expect our biggest players to be our best stewards.
