Your old RV is packing up from Cole Road
Good morning from the Valley — the fields are talking, the rivers are moving, and we've got stories from five communities that matter. And listen, out here, we're used to seeing a bit of everything along the highways, especially with folks travelling through. But there's a particular stretch of Highway 1, right by Cole Road, where an RV camp has been a fixture for a few years now. Well, that's changing. The province is clearing it out, and the last two residents are packing up.
This isn't just about a couple of RVs moving on; it's a quiet shift happening right on our doorstep, right there off Highway 1 as you’re heading east towards the Whatcom Road exit. For a while, that spot served as a kind of informal community for dozens of people. It offered a place for folks to park up their homes on wheels, a spot for those struggling to find affordable housing in a region where housing prices are just… well, they're something else. Now, with the province stepping in, those last remaining folks are having to find somewhere new to go, and it really makes you think about how we support people in our community.
### What This Means for Abbotsford
* **Housing Pressure:** This highlights the ongoing housing crisis, not just in Vancouver, but right here in the Valley. Where do people go when these informal solutions are no longer an option? * **Visibility of Homelessness:** For many, this camp was a visible reminder of homelessness in Abbotsford. Its closure doesn't make the issue disappear, it just moves it. * **Community Impact:** These sites, however informal, can become communities. Breaking them up has a real human cost.
You know, it makes you wonder about the bigger picture. We're a generous community, full of hard-working people, and we feed this province, *roti-pani* for everyone. But we're also seeing more and more people struggle to find a roof over their head. This closure really makes you sit with that.
