You won't believe what they found in Rivers.

Rivers just saw something you won't believe

Good morning from the wheat belt — five communities, strong roots, and stories worth your time.

Well, oba nä. I heard about this and my heart just went heavy once. A student in Rivers, you know, that small town just a short drive north of Brandon? The police say they arrested a teenage boy there who was planning school attacks. Not just one, but simultaneous attacks with another youth in Norway House. Rivers. You drive through it, past the Co-op and the curling rink, and you think of quiet prairie life. It just goes to show you, sometimes the most unsettling things happen where you least expect them. You think of places like that, and you just don't expect such darkness. This isn't some big city thing, this is our own backyard. It makes you think about what's going on underneath the surface, even in places that seem so peaceful.

You know, when you live out here, we often talk about how our communities are tight-knit, how everyone knows everyone. And that's usually a good thing, a comfort. But when something like this comes to light, it just leaves you wondering. What are we missing? What are the signs? It’s not just the big cities that have their struggles, you see. These kids, in a small town like Rivers, or up north in Norway House, they're feeling things, carrying things. We need to pay attention, all of us. This is a wake-up call, once, for all of us in the wheat belt to look out for our young people, to really listen to what they're not saying.
