Here's what happened to your Hurricanes last night
Y'all, I’m still buzzing from that one, and not in a good way. The Carolina Hurricanes dropped a heartbreaker in Vegas last night, losing 5-4 in double overtime to the Golden Knights. For anyone who tucked in early, you missed one heck of a comeback that just fell short. We were down 4-0 in the third period after a brutal second frame where Mitch Marner — yeah, *that* Mitch Marner, not even a Golden Knight, but apparently a ghost haunting our dreams — scored a hat trick, plus an assist on Hertl’s power play goal. It felt like the wheels were fixin' to come off, I'm telling you. But then, Jordan Martinook started the surge, Teuvo Hall followed up quick, and our captain Jordan Staal brought us within one, all in less than a minute. Andrei Svechnikov tied it on the power play late in the third, sending it to overtime. Then Shea Theodore ended it in the second OT. It stings, plain and simple.
The key to that third-period explosion for the Carolina Hurricanes was pure grit, and honestly, the Golden Knights just kinda took their foot off the gas. Jordan Martinook’s goal at 7:03 of the third period from Sebastian Jarvis and Luka Stankoven was the spark. Then, 26 seconds later, Teuvo Hall, off a sweet dish from Sebastian Aho and Josh Blake, made it 4-2. Just 13 seconds after *that*, Jordan Staal, with helpers from Jaccob Slavin and Ethan Robinson, made it a one-goal game. The PNC Arena would’ve erupted, even if we were watching from a dive bar downtown. Svechnikov’s power play goal with less than two minutes left, set up by Staal and Aho again, completed what could’ve been the comeback of the year. But it wasn't enough. Our boys put up 33 shots to their 35, and we just couldn't seal the deal in the extra frames.
So, what does this mean for Raleigh? Well, the Carolina Hurricanes are still sitting pretty at the top of the Metropolitan Division with 113 points, 53-22-7 on the season. We’re 7-2-1 in our last ten, so this double OT loss, while painful, doesn't sink us. It does mean we missed out on an extra point, which can always matter in the long run for playoff seeding. We’ve got some tough matchups coming up, and we need to make sure this doesn't create any kind of mental hurdle. We play the Kraken next, and then the Canucks, before heading home to face the Blue Jackets. We can’t afford to dwell on this one too long. The mood around the Research Triangle might be a little quiet this morning at the coffee shops, but we know what this team is capable of.
