You NEED to know about those new penguin chicks!
So let me tell you— I was down on Belle Isle this weekend, just enjoying the breeze by the water, thinking about how good it is to be a Detroiter when the sun's out. Then I heard about the Detroit Zoo, up there in Royal Oak, having these new babies, and my heart just melted. Three new penguin chicks, on God! Two macaroni penguins and one gentoo. Can you believe it?
Now, listen. We've got our fair share of tough news around here, right? We talk about the I-94 closures on the wire every morning, the apartment fires on the west side, the struggle is real for folks. But then you hear about new life, about these tiny little fuzzy babies at the Polk Penguin Conservation Center, and it just hits different. It's a reminder that even when things feel heavy, there's always something beautiful happening, something worth celebrating in our city and just beyond its borders.
* **What this means for Detroit:** * It's a reason to take your family to the Detroit Zoo. Seriously, the Polk Penguin Conservation Center is world-class. * Another point of pride for our region, showing off our commitment to conservation and education. * A little burst of pure, unadulterated joy in the middle of our week.
We got folks working hard every day to rebuild this city, brick by brick, neighborhood by neighborhood. From the Heidelberg Project creating art out of wreckage to the new businesses popping up on Michigan Avenue. And then you get these little penguin chicks, just doing their part, reminding us all that new beginnings are always possible. It’s a good word for Detroit, if you ask me.
Detroit on the wire—we don't leave, we rebuild.
My folks break down all the city stories every morning—catch it live at mornings.live.
