Your Council is meeting in private again
There are currently no active weather alerts in Edmonton, which, honestly, is a minor miracle for May. Just the usual atmospheric musings, you know? It's like the universe is just thinking out loud up there. However, at City Hall, the Audit Committee has been busy, or perhaps, not so busy.
On May 27, 2026, the Audit Committee, after a series of unanimous votes — all carried 7 to 0, which tells you they either agree on everything or are very good at appearing to agree — decided to move a significant portion of their meeting into private.
Specifically: * The agenda for May 27, 2026, was adopted unanimously. * The minutes from April 10, 2026, were approved unanimously. * Reports not selected for debate were approved unanimously, including the "External Auditor - Non-Audit Service Request." * Then, for the "Office of the City Auditor Recommendation Follow-up Dashboard Report - As at May 8, 2026," Councillor M. Madamombe moved that the Audit Committee meet in private. This motion also carried 7 to 0.
This private discussion was justified "pursuant to section 29 (advice from officials) of the *Access to Information Act* for the discussion of items 7.1 and 7.2." While sometimes necessary, it does mean the public is left wondering about the specifics of the advice being received. It's a common occurrence, but always worth noting when things move behind closed doors, especially when it involves auditor recommendations.
Edmonton doesn't need your approval. Never did.
