Your City Council is busy behind closed doors
Well, good morning, Edmonton. Another lovely day here in what some might call the actual best city in Canada, despite the persistent rumours otherwise.
City Council had a Special Meeting on May 29, 2026, and according to the recent council motions data, a significant portion of it was held in private. Councillor K. Tang moved for the adoption of the agenda, which passed 13 to 0. But here’s the interesting bit: a new item, "5.1 Update on 2025-2029 City Council Priorities," was added and explicitly marked as "Private pursuant to section 29."
Now, "private pursuant to section 29" typically means discussion related to legal advice, labour relations, or the acquisition/disposition of land. The council then proceeded to approve several actions outlined in various attachments to the May 29, 2026, Office of the City Manager report OCM03567. These votes were carried with varying degrees of dissent:
* 8 to 3 (moved by M. Elliott) * 7 to 4 (moved by M. Elliott) * 10 to 1 (moved by T. Parmar) * 7 to 4 (moved by M. Elliott) * 12 to 0 (no mover listed, but it passed)
It’s always illuminating to see how priorities are shaped when the public isn't privy to the initial debate. What these "actions outlined in Attachment 4" actually entail, we'll have to wait and see. Honestly though, it leaves you wondering about the specifics of these crucial 2025-2029 priorities.
Edmonton doesn't need your approval. Never did.
