Your council members are getting some nice gifts
You know, sometimes you look at the mundane rhythm of city hall — the adoption of agendas, the approval of minutes, all the thrilling stuff that keeps the gears turning — and then something pops out. Something that makes you raise an eyebrow over your third cup of coffee.
What jumped out at me from the recent civic data was the gifts received by council members. Now, don't get me wrong, it's all above board, disclosed on the public record, but it's interesting to see.
Here's the breakdown: * Councillor Andrew Knack (Ward Anirniq) received $390 from BILD Edmonton on February 18, 2026. * Councillor Anne Stevenson (Ward O-day’min) wasn't far behind, receiving $397 from BILD Edmonton Metro on March 11, 2026. * Councillor Aaron Paquette (Ward Dene) reported a grand total of "0" from "Nothing to disclose." A man of simple tastes, perhaps, or just not on the receiving end this quarter.
BILD Edmonton and BILD Edmonton Metro, for those unfamiliar, are residential construction and land development associations. It's perfectly legal for them to offer gifts, and for councillors to accept them, as long as they’re disclosed. But it does make you wonder about the optics, doesn't it? Especially when these groups frequently have business before council. Honestly though, it's part of the landscape.
We’ll keep an eye on how these relationships evolve and what future disclosures bring. Edmonton doesn't need your approval. Never did.
