Your neighbour found a century of history in their backyard
Some good morning, buddy — this is Halifax, and we have stories. And you're not gonna believe this one, my son, what the university folks are finding down at the Old Burying Ground, right there on Barrington Street. They're letting students dig around, and what they're unearthing, it's not just old bones or rusty buckles, no sir. They're getting a direct line to the folks who built this city, the ones whose stories are usually just whispers in the wind.
This isn't just about dusty old names on crumbling stones, you know? It’s about the actual people who walked these very streets, maybe even grabbed a pint down near the waterfront, argued about the price of cod, or dreamt of a better life here after stepping off a ship at Pier 21. They're finding out who these folks were, what their lives were like, even what they ate! It’s history, but it feels so fresh, like it happened last week, not a couple of hundred years ago.
### Our Buried Past, Re-told
This work by the students, it's some good, buddy. It helps us remember that our city isn't just buildings and bus routes. It's built on layers of stories, some of them a bit dark, some triumphant, all of them human.
* They're finding out about the judges who laid down the law in the early days of the province. * Learning about privateers, those daring souls who sailed out of our harbour under their own flag. * And get this, they're even learning more about the British commander who was responsible for burning down the White House! Imagine that, a bit of Halifax history tangled up with Washington, D.C.
It just goes to show, you never know what you'll find if you just take a closer look, right here in your own backyard. It makes you think about all the feet that have trod these paths before us, all the lives lived right here where we stand. And maybe, just maybe, it makes you appreciate that salty air a little bit more, knowing how much history it's carried.
Some good morning, buddy — this is Halifax, and we have stories.
My son, the crew on the morning show always has the best yarns about this city — catch 'em live at mornings.live.
