Your housing market is still a hot mess
Good morning from the Okanagan — the lake is calm, the vines are growing, and we have things to discuss.
Okay, but here's the thing nobody talks about: the real estate market is still wild, even with all the talk about things cooling down. The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) just dropped their latest podcast lineup, and it's all about making real estate "more accessible." That's nice, but it feels a bit out of touch when you're watching local prices here in Kelowna. We've got folks struggling to find anything affordable, never mind thinking about "accessibility" in the broad sense. It's about affordability, plain and simple.
### What’s Actually Happening
CREA's new podcast host, Shaun Majumder, is set to talk about "connections, community, and curiosity" in 2025. That's a good aim, sure, but what are we connecting to if we can't even afford a place to live in our own community? Episode 72 is specifically about making the real estate journey more accessible for clients with mobility, visual, or auditory barriers. This is important work, no doubt. But for many here, the barrier is simply the price tag on an average house, or even a rental.
It reminds me of those $60 bottles of wine; you don't need it, and often the more accessible, affordable option is better anyway. We need more focus on bringing down those entry points for everyone, not just those with specific needs. We're a city trying to figure out how to survive being discovered, and right now, that discovery is pricing out a lot of us.
We need to watch if these conversations at a national level translate into concrete local policies that actually make a difference on the ground, here in Kelowna.
