One in four of your neighbors are going hungry

Good morning from the Region — three cities, one wire, zero time for small talk. Let's go.

### This food insecurity news is just gut-wrenching for us

Here's the thing about this region: we see shiny tech towers in DTK and Uptown Waterloo and think, 'we've made it.' But then you get numbers like this one, and it just stops you cold. One in four households across Southwestern Ontario is facing food insecurity. That’s not a statistic, that’s your neighbours, your co-workers, maybe even someone you know from the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, quietly struggling to put food on the table.

This isn't just a general 'Southwestern Ontario' problem, though. The health units, including our own Region of Waterloo Public Health, put out a joint statement, and it hits us here, too. They found that a single adult on Ontario Works could be short anywhere from $301 to $859 every single month just for basic necessities. That's a huge schmear of a deficit. Think about that for a second when you’re strolling past the cafés on King Street or grabbing a beer at a patio in Waterloo – that gap is real and it’s right here.

* **What This Means for Kitchener-Waterloo:** * Food banks like the Food Bank of Waterloo Region are seeing unprecedented demand. * The cost of living, especially housing, continues to outpace wages for many. * It highlights the stark contrast between our tech prosperity and a growing underclass. * This isn't just about charity; it's about systemic issues in our community.

We pride ourselves on being an innovation hub, a place of progress, but if one in four families can't afford groceries, what are we really innovating towards? This is a Region issue, not just a city one, and it requires a Region-wide look in the mirror.
