Your summer flight from Saskatchewan just got way harder

Your summer flight out of Saskatchewan just got harder

Morning from the junction — here's what's moving in Melfort.

You know, it's getting harder and harder to get out of Saskatchewan if you're looking to fly somewhere. Air Canada and WestJet are cutting flights from the province this summer. They're blaming fuel prices, which, sure, that's a factor. But for people up here in northeast Saskatchewan, who already have to drive an hour and a half to Saskatoon or three hours to Regina just to catch a plane, this isn't good news. It just adds another layer of complication to leaving the province, which already feels like a commitment.

### Why This Matters for Melfort

It’s not like Melfort has its own commercial airport. We rely on Saskatoon and Regina, same as most of the trading area — Star City, Tisdale, Nipawin. Less flights means:

* Fewer options for flight times. * Potentially higher prices due to less competition. * More difficulty coordinating connections, especially if you're trying to fly out for business from the Melfort Research Farm or one of the co-ops.

We're already driving past prime black loam to get to the airport. Adding more inconvenience isn't going to help people who need to travel for work or to see family. It’s a bigger deal than it sounds when you're already starting your trip with a road trip down Highways 3, 6, or 41. It affects how easily people can connect Melfort with the rest of the country, and that matters for a city that serves as a hub for such a productive agricultural region.

It just means another layer of planning, and another reason for people to maybe just stick around for a Mustangs game at the Kerry Vickar Centre instead of trying to fly out.

That's the wire from the junction. If you want more straight talk on what's happening, tune into the morning show — you can catch it live at mornings.live.
