Well, that was a tough descent last night. Woke up this morning feeling like I just hiked a fourteener in a snowstorm – exhilarated for the challenge, but definitely feeling the sting of the cold. The Oilers took it 4-3 in regulation at Ball Arena, and while we had some flashes of that signature Avs speed, Edmonton just read the terrain a little better in the key moments. Colton got us on the board quick, which felt like a perfect launch, but Nugent-Hopkins tied it on the power play, and then Roslovic snuck one in right at the end of the first, just deflating the energy after Necas gave us a power play lead. You could feel the air go out of the building a bit after that.
The second period felt like we were climbing against a stiff headwind, and Nugent-Hopkins got his second of the night early in the frame to make it 3-2. Nichushkin found the line and brought us back within one in the third, a real surge of hope, but then McDavid – you just can’t give that guy an inch – buried a power-play goal to seal it. Our 24 shots to their 30 tells a story of an Avs team that just couldn't quite generate enough sustained pressure. Malinski had a solid assist on Nichushkin's goal, showing some good vision, but overall, we just didn't have enough answers for the Oilers' top-end talent when it mattered most. It felt like we were just a step behind all night.
So, what does this tough loss mean? We’re still sitting pretty at 43-11-9, firmly in first in the Central, and this is just a blip in a 7-3-0 run over our last ten. No need to panic, but it's a good reminder that every team in this league is capable of making you pay if you're not absolutely dialed in. We've got a couple of days to recalibrate before we welcome the Minnesota Wild to town. This isn't a season-defining moment, but it's a chance to learn, to adjust our approach, and to ensure we’re bringing that full-throttle Avalanche hockey we know we’re capable of. The vibe in Denver this morning is a little subdued, like after a surprise late-season snowstorm, but we know the sun will be out soon.
Altitude hockey — the air is thin and the Avs are here. Vanny out.
