*Ay, Dios mío*, Bolts Nation. Waking up this morning, it feels like a bad cafecito, you know? Last night at Amalie, we just… we didn’t have it. The Blue Jackets, a team we absolutely should be handling, came in and took a 5-2 win from us right in our own building. We got on the board first with Goncalves at 13:38 of the first, a nice little setup from Hedman and Kucherov, and for a minute there, the Tesla coil went off, the energy was there, everything felt right. But then the second period hit, and it was like we forgot how to play our game. Provorov, then Garland, then Marchenko on the power play… it was a collapse, plain and simple. Cirelli got one back, which was a little spark, but then Garland again in the third, another power play goal, and Fabbro sealed it. The shots were 32-18 for them – that’s not our team. That’s not how we play under Cooper.
Looking at the tape, the breakdowns were glaring, especially on the penalty kill. Giving up two power play goals, one to Marchenko and another to Garland in the third, that’s just not acceptable for a team with our veteran core. We talk about structure, about denying entries, about aggressive pressure in the kill box – and it just wasn't there. Merzlikins in their net made some big saves, but honestly, we didn't pepper him enough. Kucherov had an assist, sure, but where was the consistent attack? Where was the relentless forecheck that wears teams down? It felt like we were waiting for something to happen instead of making it happen, and against a team like Columbus, that’s a dangerous game to play.
This loss stings, no doubt about it. We’re sitting at 39-20-4, still second in the Atlantic, but our last 10 games are 4-6-0, and that’s a trend we absolutely have to reverse. The Panthers are breathing down our necks, and while I’m not losing sleep over them yet, we need to get back to playing our brand of hockey. We’ve got a tough stretch coming up, and we need to clean up these defensive lapses and find that killer instinct again. The vibe around Ybor City this morning is a little subdued, a little quiet for a Friday, but you know what? We’ve seen this team overcome worse. We’ve got the two Cups, we know what it takes. Time to dig deep and remember who we are.
