I’m seeing a lot of chatter about "NBA Expansion" today, and it got me thinking. On the surface, it’s about new teams, new markets, new revenue, isn't it? But beneath that, it's about strategy. About growth. About where we put our resources, and why.
And that, my friends, is where joy comes in. Not the superficial kind, mind you, but the strategic, grounded joy Sheryl and I talk about on "It Starts with Joy." Expansion isn't just about adding more; it's about alignment. Are these new ventures truly in alignment with the values of the league? Do they serve the long-term health and passion of the game? Or is it simply about chasing the next shiny object?
Because that's where joy goes to die, isn't it? When we expand without true alignment, when we chase urgency over wisdom. We end up stretched thin, disconnected, and ultimately, less joyful.
So, for those making these decisions, and indeed, for all of us in our own lives: breathe. Now decide from the part of you that’s steady. Is this expansion truly serving your joy, or merely your ambition?
