## Your city hall is watching immigration debates heat up
Oye, so while you were probably hitting up Matt's Big Breakfast or trying to beat the heat on a morning canal bike ride, there’s been a lot of movement in D.C. that affects us right here in Phoenix. We’re talking about immigration, mijo, and it’s always a big topic in the Valley.
According to recent updates, the Senate just pushed through a $70 billion bill for immigration enforcement. Seventy billion dollars, just for enforcement, with no limits on ICE. Now, that's a serious number. At the same time, over in the courts, a federal judge has ruled that Trump’s freeze on asylum applications from 39 countries—that's a lot of countries, eh?—violates federal law.
What does this mean for us?
* More federal money is heading into the enforcement side of immigration, which we feel directly here with our border proximity. * The judicial branch is pushing back on executive actions, creating some whiplash for asylum seekers and the groups who support them in places like South Phoenix. * The SAVE America Act, which had voting restrictions, failed in the Senate due to GOP defections. So, that particular piece of legislation isn't moving forward.
This back and forth, it creates a lot of uncertainty for families and communities across the state. We’ve seen this movie before, and it’s never a simple watch. Keep an eye on how these federal decisions start to ripple down to local policy and our streets.
