Your city is failing our bilingual kids
Look, here’s the deal— A new report just dropped, and it’s not good news for Phoenix families, especially those of us who speak more than one language at home. Arizona, mi gente, is ranked among the worst states in the nation for bilingual preschoolers. This comes from a report released Monday, June 8th, that really hits close to home for South Phoenix.
We know that speaking Spanish, or any second language, is a huge asset. For our kids to be behind before they even hit kindergarten? That's a problem that goes beyond the classroom, oye. It affects how our kids connect, how they learn, and ultimately, what opportunities they have in a city as diverse as ours. This isn't just a number; it's about the future of our little ones in neighborhoods like ours.
* Arizona is near the bottom for bilingual preschooler support. * Report released Monday, June 8th, 2026. * This impacts families in every ward, but especially in South Phoenix where bilingualism is a way of life.
The question now is what City Hall is going to do about it. Are we going to see new programs, more resources funneled into early education, especially in our bilingual communities? Because if we don't fix this now, we're setting our kids up to play catch-up for years. That’s the Valley, baby — 115 degrees and we’re still out here, trying to make sure our kids get a fair shot.
