You will not believe what's happening with Manitoba Hydro
Morning from the Central Plains — here's what's moving through Portage today. You hear a lot about the big utility projects, the ones that send power down the lines right past our fields and into the city. But the chatter around the coffee shops this morning, especially down by the processing plants, is all about Manitoba Hydro defending their plan to build three new natural gas turbines. They're trying to head off power shortages, they say, but the idea of more gas-fired generation in 2026 is certainly getting people talking.

Now, I understand the need to keep the lights on, especially when you think about the power it takes to run the potato plants out on the west side of town, or the massive operations at McCain's. We're a hub for food processing, and that takes a consistent, reliable energy supply. Hydro's argument is that these turbines are a necessary stop-gap, a way to bridge the gap until they can get more renewable projects online. They're facing public hearings on this, and you can bet there are strong opinions on all sides.
* **Reliability:** The concern is keeping the grid stable, especially with Manitoba's growing population and industrial demands. * **Emissions:** On the flip side, adding more natural gas generation raises questions about the province's environmental goals. * **Cost:** Ratepayers, especially here in Portage who already watch every dollar, are wondering what this means for their Hydro bill down the line.
For us here in Portage la Prairie, it's about more than just a power bill. It's about the bigger picture for Manitoba's energy future, and how that shapes our economy right here between the Trans-Canada and the Assiniboine River. We need power to keep the province fed, and how Hydro decides to get that power affects every one of us.
