Your mail might soon be in a box on the street

Good morning from the Fundy shore — the tide's turning, and so is New Brunswick. Let's get into it.

## Your mail could soon be coming from a box on the street

I'll tell you what, Canada Post is planning on converting a pile of homes to community mailbox delivery over the next five years. They've already started talking to 13 communities for the first conversions in late 2026 and early 2027. Now, for some of us, this isn't news, right? Plenty of places in the suburbs, especially those built in the last few decades, already have these boxes. But Canada Post is talking about a national conversion, and that means some of those old routes, the ones where the mail carrier walks right up to your door, are on the chopping block.

It just feels like another little piece of the old way of life is fading, doesn't it? Imagine trying to explain to someone from away that in some parts of uptown Saint John, say around the Loyalist burial ground or even down King Street, the postie still delivers right to your door. It's a nice little connection, a bit of routine. With the steep hills and tricky stairs in some of our older neighbourhoods, I'm curious how they're going to plan this out. Are they going to put those big metal boxes on steep slopes? What about snow clearing in the winter? It's not just a convenience thing; it's a piece of the city's character, eh?

### What This Means for Saint John

* **Uptown Charm:** Many of Saint John's historic neighbourhoods, like those near the City Market or around Brittain Street, still have door-to-door delivery. This change will be felt directly there. * **Accessibility Concerns:** Winter in Saint John is no joke. Clearing snow and ice from community boxes, especially for folks with mobility issues, is a real consideration. * **Service Changes:** This isn't just about where you pick up your mail; it's about the entire logistics of how Canada Post operates in our city.

It’s one of those things that seems small, but it touches everyone. For a city like Saint John, with its mix of old and new, it’s going to be interesting to see how this all shakes out on the ground.
