Your train station is moving to a rail yard. Seriously?

Your train station is moving, *mon ami*

Bonjour from the North — three cities, one corridor, and the stories that don't make it south of Barrie.

So, you know how the Agawa Canyon Tour Train is, for many, the *raison d'être* to come to the Sault in the fall? It’s our big tourist draw, bringing people from all over to see the boreal forest light up. For years, the train station has been right there in the Canal District, a stone’s throw from the locks, next to the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. It’s perfect, right? You get off the train, you’re in the heart of things, close to restaurants, hotels, everything. Well, *tabarnak*, it seems that entire purpose-built station is moving. And a local business just found out, like everyone else, that it’s being relocated to a rail yard near Algoma Steel. Just like that.

### A New View for Visitors

Can you imagine? This isn't just a small change; this is a whole shift in how visitors experience our city. The Canal District was developed to be a hub, an entry point. Now, tourists will be getting off the train in a rail yard. No disrespect to the view of the blast furnaces at Algoma Steel, which are the heartbeat of this city and a powerful symbol of our industrial heritage, but it's not exactly the same vibe as stepping out into the vibrant Canal District. This is going to change the flow of people, and the small businesses that count on that foot traffic, like the ones near the station now, they’re going to feel it.

What This Means for Sault Ste. Marie:

* **Tourist Experience:** Visitors arriving for one of Ontario's most scenic tours will now start and end their journey in an industrial area, not our picturesque waterfront. * **Local Businesses:** Shops and eateries in the Canal District could see a significant drop in foot traffic from train passengers. * **City Planning:** It raises questions about long-term vision for tourism and the Canal District, which has seen so much investment.

It’s just… it feels like another one of those things where decisions get made, and the people on the ground, the ones who make this city run, are the last to know. We work hard to build up our corner of the world, and then something like this happens. It really makes you wonder about the bigger picture, doesn't it?
