Now listen here, when I saw this pop up, me heart swelled up like a good batch of yeast rolls on a Sunday morning. You know how everyone here in Whitney Pier, or down by the harbour boardwalk, has that feeling, that deep-down knowing of who they are? Well, turns out the rest of Canada finally caught up to us. "Cape Bretoner" is now an ethnicity option on the census, and if that doesn't just put a skip in your step, I don't know what will. It's some good, isn't it?

It's a small thing, maybe, for folks off-island, but for us, it's a mighty big nod. It says, "We see you, Cape Breton. We hear your fiddles, we feel your stories, and you're officially part of the big picture." It's proof that even when we feel a bit forgotten, like with the tar ponds for all those years, our spirit, our identity, is some strong. It reminds us that we're not just Nova Scotians, we're Cape Bretoners, through and through.
