Your new map of OCN is truly something else
Morning from the Gateway — here's what's moving in The Pas.
You know, sometimes the news out of Winnipeg feels a million miles away. Sewage spills, road closures — it's important, sure, but it's not *our* everyday. But then something comes across the wire that makes you sit up straight, something that truly resonates here along the Saskatchewan River. Opaskwayak Cree Nation has unveiled a brand-new map, eight metres square, that features over 150 traditional Cree place names. This isn't just about pretty cartography; this is about re-establishing identity, history, and a connection to this land that runs deeper than any survey marker.
### Why This Matters for Us
This project by OCN isn't just a local curiosity; it's a powerful statement. For those of us who grew up here, whether on the OCN side or in The Pas, we understand the layers of history. This map is a revitalization, pulling forward knowledge that’s always been here, but perhaps not always seen or acknowledged in the public sphere. Think about how much of our everyday language around here is rooted in Cree — places like Miskooseepi, the "red river," or Opaskwayak itself, referring to the narrows.
* **Reclaiming History:** This map re-centres Indigenous perspectives on the land we all share. * **Education for Everyone:** It's a massive teaching tool, not just for OCN members, but for anyone who calls this region home, from students at UCN to long-time residents. * **Cultural Strength:** It’s a visible, tangible commitment to language and culture preservation.
This isn't just about what happened yesterday; it's about what continues to shape us. When you drive out towards Clearwater Lake, or think about the forestry operations in the region, knowing these traditional names adds another dimension to understanding our home. It reminds us that The Pas has been the northern gateway for centuries, and these names tell the story of that enduring presence. This map helps us all see our shared landscape with new, old eyes.
