Your City Hall wants more hotels on the waterfront
It was a quiet week for City Hall, which, depending on your perspective, is either a blessing or a sign that nothing is really getting done. But there was one vote that caught my eye, a subtle nod to how Vancouver sees its future.
On April 14th, City Council held a Public Hearing regarding a CD-1 (363) Text Amendment for a significant chunk of our waterfront — 1055-1085 Canada Place and 1001-1045 West Waterfront Road. This is essentially about what kind of development is allowed in that prime downtown spot, right where you catch the Seabus or grab a coffee before the morning rush. The decision was "Carried," meaning it passed, though Councillor R Bligh was absent from the vote.
What does this mean for you? * **More Hotels:** This amendment generally clears the path for increased hotel and commercial space along that stretch. Think more towers, more glass, more transient visitors. * **Prime Real Estate:** It's a strategic move for a city that relies heavily on tourism and international business. * **The *Omotenashi* Question:** It does raise questions about balancing the city's role as a global destination with the needs of its long-term residents.
It’s another step towards a Vancouver that caters to the postcard view, and you have to wonder where the balance point is. What will it feel like to walk that seawall in another five years?
