Your quick lube shop is lyin' to you.

Your quick lube shop might be straight-up lyin' to ya

Look— we’ve all been there, right? You pull into one of those quick lube spots, thinkin' you’re gonna be in and out, get your oil changed, maybe a tire rotation. Simple. But then, ten minutes later, some kid with a clipboard is tellin' you your blinker fluid is low, your engine's breathin' fire, and your whole car's gonna explode if you don't drop a grand right then and there. I'm just sayin', it feels fishy, doesn't it? Well, someone from AAA Northeast, our very own Car Doctah, John Paul, just got a letter from a reader who felt the same way, and he's basically sayin' yeah, those places might be tryin' to fleece ya.

Here's the thing, this ain't some isolated incident. This reader went in for a routine oil change at a quick lube, and they tried to upsell 'em on a bunch of stuff. Now, Paul, he knows his stuff. He laid out exactly why some of those recommendations were probably garbage. It’s a classic move, you know? Get you in the door for somethin' cheap, then scare you into spendin' a fortune on services you don't need. It's like goin' to a Sox game and payin' twenty bucks for a flat beer – you feel ripped off, but what are ya gonna do?

### What This Means for Your Ride

* **Trust Your Gut:** If a recommendation feels off, it probably is. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

* **Get a Second Opinion:** Seriously, if they're pushin' major work, take your car to a mechanic you trust, even if it's just your buddy from Dorchester who knows his way around an engine.

* **Know Your Car:** A little knowledge goes a long way. Read your owner's manual. Know what routine maintenance your car *actually* needs.

We're all hustlin' out here, tryin' to make a livin', pay the rent on that triple-decker, maybe grab a coffee at Dunkin' without breakin' the bank. Don't let some kid in a jumpsuit at a quick lube tell you your exhaust bearings need greasin'. Stay smart, Boston. Wicked early, wicked real — that's how we do it from Dot to the Harbor.

You gotta hear John Paul break this stuff down on the air, he's wicked smart. Catch him and the crew live at mornings.live.
