You can't bet the Kentucky Derby in Raleigh. Seriously.

You can't bet on the Derby even with sports betting here

Bless your heart, if you thought you were gonna stroll down to your local watering hole, place a bet on the Kentucky Derby this Saturday, and then kick back with a mint julep — well, I'm telling you, you've got another thing coming. Even with sports betting now legal and live here in North Carolina, a little thing like horse racing somehow got left out of the party. It's got folks at the Boylan Bridge Brewpub scratching their heads, look, especially with the Derby being such a rite of spring.

What's the Deal?

Now, I know, it feels a little contradictory, doesn't it? We can put money down on our Carolina Hurricanes making a deep playoff run — and bless their hearts, I sure hope they do this year, 'cause I've been a fan since way before 2006 — but when it comes to the "fastest two minutes in sports," our state just isn't having it. Here's what's happening:

* **The Law's the Law:** The legislation that passed to legalize sports wagering in North Carolina specifically excludes horse racing. That's the long and short of it.

* **No Online or In-Person:** It doesn't matter if you're trying an app on your phone while strolling through Pullen Park or heading to a brick-and-mortar sports book (when they eventually open up); horse racing simply isn't an option.

* **Why the Exclusion?** The reasons are varied and complex, often tied to existing federal laws like the Interstate Horseracing Act and how individual states choose to regulate different forms of gambling. It's a whole legislative kettle of fish, I'm telling you.

This means if you're planning a Derby party in Oakwood and wanted to make things interesting with some friendly wagers, you'll have to stick to the old-fashioned way of picking names out of a hat. No official, legal betting for you. It's a prime example of how even with new laws, there are always little quirks and exceptions that pop up. That's the Triangle, y'all — come for the tech, stay for the sweet tea.

The folks on the Morning Wire chat about these kinds of head-scratchers every day; catch 'em live at mornings.live.
