Your WakeMed vote just hit a snag. What happened?

SHARE

Your vote on WakeMed is finally here.

Alright now, bless their hearts, our good folks on the Wake County Board of Commissioners were supposed to vote on that big Atrium Health-WakeMed deal, the one that's got everyone in healthcare talking from Six Forks Road to Garner. But wouldn't you know it, the State Treasurer, Ol' Dale Folwell, along with our State Auditor, Dave Boliek, they both just up and said, "Hold on a minute, y'all." They asked for a delay, and a delay is what they got. I'm telling you, this whole thing feels like a slow Southern waltz, a whole lot of steps and then just when you think you're getting somewhere, someone changes the music.

Look, this isn't just some backroom deal, not with WakeMed being such a cornerstone of our community. We're talking about a facility that serves folks all over Wake County, from those living in the historic district of Oakwood to our growing communities out past the Beltline. When you're talking about healthcare, especially one as vital as WakeMed, it affects *everyone*. The Auditor and Treasurer both raised some serious questions about transparency and how this could impact the public's access to care, and the financial implications for Wake County taxpayers. It’s not a small thing, y’all.

### What This Means for Raleigh

* **Financial Scrutiny:** The core of the concern revolves around the financial terms of the deal and how they might impact public assets.

* **Public Access:** There are questions about whether this partnership could change how Raleigh residents access critical health services.

* **Transparency Matters:** The Auditor's public call for delay specifically highlighted concerns about the lack of transparent information surrounding the proposed vote.

This isn't just about big hospital systems; it's about the kind of healthcare we're going to have here in the Triangle, about whether the folks who need it most can still get it, and whether our public institutions are being handled with the care they deserve. This delay means more time for questions, and hopefully, more time for answers that serve the people of Raleigh. That's the Triangle, y'all — come for the tech, stay for the sweet tea.

My folks on the Morning Wire team are digging deep into this, y'all — catch their latest insights live at mornings.live.
