Your hospital region just shut surgeries because of ants.

Your hospital is crawling with what now?

Morning from the Automobile City — here's what's growing in Steinbach. And sometimes, what's *crawling* in Carman, apparently. My jaw just about hit the floor when I read the report about the hospital in Carman having to shut down surgeries because of an ant problem. You heard that right. Ants. Not a burst pipe, not a power outage, but actual ants.

This isn't just a funny story you tell over a *faspa* spread. This is serious for folks in the region. Southern Health-Santé Sud covers a massive area, including us here in Steinbach. When a facility, even one outside our immediate city limits, has to suspend services, it puts a strain on the whole system. Imagine being scheduled for something important, maybe at Boundary Trails or Bethesda in Steinbach, and then having to scramble because of... ants.

### What This Means for Southeast Manitoba

* **Service Delays:** Any disruption means patients might wait longer or have to travel further for care.

* **System Strain:** It highlights the tightrope our regional health services walk, and how even small, unexpected issues can create big headaches.

* **Perception:** Honestly, it's not the kind of news we want coming out of our health region. We're building new facilities, expanding, and focusing on growth, and then we hear about something like this. It makes you wonder about maintenance and the basics.

Steinbach has invested heavily in our local health infrastructure, and we're seeing steady growth in new residents who need access to reliable services. When issues pop up in neighbouring communities, it reminds us how interconnected our health region really is and why we need consistent, reliable facilities across the board.
