Calgary City Hall's keeping secrets from you again

Your City Hall meetings are pretty locked down

Alright, Calgary, let's talk about what's *actually* happening down at City Hall, because a quick look at the recent council votes from March 10th shows they've been busy keeping things under wraps. For real though, it looks like a whole lot of "Confidential Attachment 2" and "Closed Meeting discussions" were flying around.

Specifically, during that Strategic Meeting of Council on March 10th, motions to keep discussions confidential, pursuant to Section 29 (Advice from officials) of the Access to Information Act, were carried. Councilor Jennifer Wyness voted "Yes" on a motion to adopt Report C2026-0240, which also directed that Confidential Attachment 2 be held confidential. Same deal for Councilor Dan McLean, who also voted "Yes" on multiple motions to go into closed meetings and keep discussions confidential. Now, Landon Johnston voted "No" on a couple of those confidentiality motions, which is interesting, but the motions still carried. It’s like they're capping that conversation before it even gets started. This is Calgary — we've seen the boom, we've seen the bust, and we showed up anyway, but it's hard to show up when you don't know what's being discussed behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, on the development front, our real-time monitor shows 31 commercial/new construction permits were issued in Calgary this week. That's a steady hum, meaning new projects are still breaking ground across the city. You gotta wonder if any of those new developments were part of the "confidential" talks, eh?

What this means is that while the city keeps growing, a lot of the strategic decision-making around it is happening away from public eyes. We'll be watching for any public outcomes from these closed-door sessions to see how they impact our city.
