Calgary, what did your council hide on March 10?

City Hall's Quiet Meetings Got Us Wondering, For Real

Alright, Calgary, let's talk about what's been simmering down at City Hall, because some of these recent council votes feel a bit like they're capping a conversation before it even starts.

**What's Happening Behind Closed Doors?**

On March 10, City Council had a Strategic Meeting where things got a little tight-lipped, according to the official meeting minutes. There were multiple motions, all related to a single report, C2026-0240, that included a "Confidential Attachment 2." Councillor Jennifer Wyness voted "Yes" to adopt the report after an amendment, and that motion carried. But then, things got really interesting when Council moved into a Closed Meeting, as per Section 29 (Advice from officials) of the Access to Information Act. Both Councillor Dan McLean and Councillor Landon Johnston voted on related motions to keep those discussions confidential. Johnston notably voted "No" on motions to adopt the report and keep discussions confidential, even though the motions still carried. It makes you wonder what was in that attachment and what advice officials were giving that needed such a tight lid.

For real though, when council goes confidential, it’s usually for good reasons like legal advice or personnel matters, but it always makes the public curious. This is Calgary – we’ve seen the boom, we’ve seen the bust, and we showed up anyway, so we appreciate transparency. We’ll be watching to see if any details from Report C2026-0240 ever see the light of day.
