Your City Hall just approved more high-rises
Alright, Calgary. Cassidy Redcloud here on the Morning Wire, and we're looking at what’s been cookin’ down at City Hall. For real though, this week’s civic intelligence monitor data, collected as of 2026-05-07 at 12:59:59 PM, shows 12 new commercial/new construction permits were issued across Calgary. That’s a steady stream, eh?
What's really caught my eye, though, is the recent votes from the Calgary Planning Commission. On March 12, 2026, we saw multiple motions carried, all recommending that Council give three readings to various planning reports. Commissioners Nathan Hawryluk, Thom Mahler, Charles Boechler, Katherine Wagner, and Chris Hardwicke all voted "Yes" on reports CPC2026-0209 and CPC2026-0143. These reports are all about approving more development. This is Calgary — we've seen the boom, we've seen the bust, and we showed up anyway. This kind of consistent push for new construction, especially in a city still finding its post-oil stride, really points to the city’s continued growth ambitions.
