Your councillors just punted homelessness plans to 2026. Seriously?

Your councillors sure are taking their time on this homelessness thing

So, it looks like Edmonton City Council is, shall we say, taking its sweet time with some pretty critical reports. Specifically, the Community and Public Services Committee pushed back the due date for "Options to Support Emergency Shelters" to September 25, 2026. And for the "Transition Strategy for Homelessness Related Services"? Well, that’s now "To be determined." This happened on March 2nd, with the agenda adoption and minute approvals passing a tidy 3 to 0. You’d think these things would be a priority, given the number of folks you see around Churchill Square and the River Valley trails when the temperature dips below freezing.

Honestly though, it’s not exactly surprising. These things move at glacial speeds sometimes, like a traffic jam on the Yellowhead in January. We’ve seen this before. It means we won't see concrete plans for a while, which is a tough pill to swallow for those who need support now. Keep an eye on those September committee meetings; that’s where the rubber might finally hit the road.

Edmonton doesn't need your approval. Never did.
