Your Council Had a Little Squabble Yesterday
Well, folks, another Tuesday at City Hall, and while most of it was the usual meticulous march through agendas and minutes – all carried 12 to 0, if you're keeping score – there was a moment. A brief, almost poetic, disagreement over something as fundamental as time itself.
Councillor A. Paquette brought forward a motion to adjust the rules on time limits for the March 17/18 meeting. You know, to give everyone a little more room to breathe, or perhaps pontificate, depending on your view of Council debates. And wouldn't you know it, that motion was defeated, 7 to 6. Seven councillors – A. Knack, A. Paquette, J. Wright, K. Principe, M. Janz, R. Clarke, and T. Parmar – wanted more time, while six – A. Salvador, A. Stevenson, E. Rutherford, K. Tang, M. Elliott, and J. Morgan – seemed perfectly content with the existing constraints. It's almost a philosophical debate, isn't it? The push and pull of efficiency versus thoroughness.
It tells you a little something about the dynamics down on 99 Street. Those kinds of close votes, even on procedural matters, often signal deeper currents. Keep an eye on those seven 'yes' votes; they might be indicating a faction that wants more robust debate, or at least, more time to make their points.
