Your councillors just voted 3-0 on everything. Why?

Your city hall's quiet March day

Another Tuesday in Edmonton City Hall, and honestly, sometimes these Agenda Review Committee meetings feel less like governance and more like a particularly well-attended game of bureaucratic chess. On March 31, 2026, the committee – consisting of Councillors Knack, Stevenson, and Wright – met, as the voting records show, to adopt their agenda, approve their minutes, and decide whether to discuss an item publicly or privately. All five motions, including the one to meet in private under the *Access to Information Act* for item 2.1 (advice from officials), carried unanimously, 3-0. It’s the kind of consensus that makes you wonder if they’re just exceptionally aligned, or if the coffee was particularly strong that morning.

But even with unanimous votes, the pulse of the city keeps on. Our 311 service requests continue to paint a picture of what’s truly on Edmontonians' minds. "General Information" leads the pack with a staggering 160,623 requests, followed by "Routes and Schedules" at 112,470. These numbers, straight from the City’s data, tell you what really matters to folks trying to get around and stay informed in this city. It’s a subtle reminder that while some decisions are made behind closed doors, the daily grind of city life is very much public.

Expenses also catch the eye. Councillor Clarke, for example, spent $825.88 on accommodation and $685.00 on registration for the 2025 Alberta Municipalities Convention in Calgary. Councillor Elliott also expensed $825.88 for accommodation at the same event, along with $348.00 for food and incidentals. These are the kinds of numbers that always get people talking, especially when you consider the price of a decent perogy platter on Whyte.

What to watch for? Well, the ongoing flow of 311 requests will continue to be a barometer for what services are truly impacting residents. And those convention expenses? They'll roll in, year after year, like the first snowfall in October.
