Your Council went private on March 31. What did they hide?

Your Council Had a Private Meeting. Here's Why.

Edmonton City Hall’s Agenda Review Committee met on March 31, 2026, and while most of their proceedings are public, one item of discussion was specifically moved to a private session. Councillor J. Wright moved that the committee meet in private "pursuant to section 29 (advice from officials) of the *Access to Information Act* for the discussion of item 2.1," and it passed 3-0. All three committee members present – A. Knack, A. Stevenson, and J. Wright – voted in favor.

What does "advice from officials" mean for us, the residents? It usually involves discussions where legal counsel, city administration, or other officials provide their insights on a matter that could, for instance, involve ongoing negotiations, sensitive personnel issues, or potential litigation. It’s the kind of thing that requires a bit of discretion, like when the Oilers are trying to work out a new contract and you don't want the whole world knowing every detail, you know?

* All motions related to the agenda and minutes for that March 31st meeting passed unanimously, 3-0. * The committee members involved are a Knack, a Stevenson, and j Wright.

This particular motion means that whatever was discussed under "item 2.1" required a level of confidentiality. Honestly though, it’s a fairly standard procedure. It prevents premature disclosure that could jeopardize a negotiation or compromise legal strategy. We’ll be watching to see if any public-facing decisions arise from whatever was discussed behind closed doors.

Edmonton doesn't need your approval. Never did.
