Your councillors are already spending big on their Calgary trip

What your council is spending on next year’s Calgary trip

Good morning, Edmonton. Darren Fedoruk here, coming to you from a decidedly less frosty morning than the one we had last week. The River Valley actually looks like it might thaw this century.

City Hall has been busy with some fairly standard procedural stuff, but there were a couple of interesting tidbits that popped up in the recent records. Perhaps the most compelling, if you're like me and appreciate a good look at the bottom line, are the council expenses for the 2025 Alberta Municipalities Convention.

Councillor Clarke and Councillor Elliott are both slated to spend $825.88 each on accommodation for the November 12-14, 2025 convention in Calgary. Councillor Clarke also has $685.00 for registration, while Councillor Elliott has $348.00 set aside for food and incidentals. It’s always good to see where the money goes, especially when it’s going to Calgary. Honestly though, these conventions are important for municipal learning and networking, so the spending is hardly without precedent. Still, knowing the exact figures now, almost a year and a half out, provides a certain clarity.

* Councillor Clarke: $825.88 (Accommodation) + $685.00 (Registration) * Councillor Elliott: $825.88 (Accommodation) + $348.00 (Food and Incidentals)

This early reporting of expenses allows us to see the planning process in motion. It’s part of that ongoing transparency we all appreciate. It'll be worth keeping an eye on whether these figures fluctuate as we get closer to the event itself.

Edmonton doesn't need your approval. Never did.
