Your MPP just got a raise after 16 years. How do you feel?

Did you know your MPP just got a raise?

Good morning from the Region — three cities, one wire, zero time for small talk. Let's go.

Here's the thing about this region: we're constantly talking about affordability, about how hard it is to make ends meet in Kitchener, in Waterloo, in Cambridge. You hear it at the Kitchener Market on Saturday mornings, you hear it from students at the University of Waterloo trying to find a place that isn't half their tuition. So when I saw that MPPs in Ontario are getting a 4.2% raise, after a 16-year salary freeze, it certainly got my attention. It makes you wonder, doesn't it?

The Details of the Raise

Let's be clear about what happened here. Last year, all parties at Queen's Park agreed to a 35% pay raise for MPPs, along with a new pension plan. That's a big jump, and it ended a salary freeze that had been in place for 16 years. This 4.2% raise is the latest instalment of that agreement. It’s not just a small cost-of-living adjustment; it’s part of a larger plan to increase their compensation significantly. It's a Region issue, not just a Toronto one, because these are our local representatives benefiting.

* **What was agreed?** A 35% pay raise and new pension plan for MPPs. * **When was the freeze?** 16 years, ending last year. * **What's happening now?** MPPs receive a 4.2% increase, part of that larger agreement.

For us here in Kitchener-Waterloo, with the ION LRT construction still somehow ongoing and housing prices through the roof, it just feels a bit… out of step. We're a hub of innovation, sure, but that doesn't mean everyone's living large. It’s hard to reconcile the struggles of families trying to keep up with the cost of groceries and rent, especially around areas like Victoria Park or even out in the Mennonite communities near St. Jacobs, with news like this from our provincial leaders. It makes you think about who's really feeling the pinch, and who isn't.

That's your wire for today. Anja Baumann-Fong, MiTL Sports Desk.
