The Los Angeles Chargers just went shopping and we need to talk

Your Los Angeles Chargers just signed Trey Lance. This is not what I expected.

Respectfully, what are we doing, y'all? The Los Angeles Chargers signed Trey Lance. You know, Trey Lance, the quarterback who barely played for the 49ers and then got shipped to Dallas. Is this a depth move? A 'let's see what he's got' lottery ticket? Because from my spot here at Harold & Belle's, where the real talk happens, it feels like a low-stakes gamble on a guy who hasn't proven he can consistently deliver. Our guy, Justin Herbert, is still here, still the franchise. So, this isn't about replacing him, absolutely not. But it’s not exactly the splash play that makes the folks out in the South Bay or even in Leimert Park jump up and say, 'Yeah, that’s the one!' It's a head-scratcher, something that makes you squint a little, like when you’re trying to read the menu at Daikokuya in Little Tokyo after a long day.

Honestly, this move tells me the Los Angeles Chargers are definitely in a 'filling holes' phase, but maybe with a slightly dull drill bit. We were 11-6 last season, on the cusp, right? But that L2 streak at the end, that lingers. This isn't the 'all-in' signal I was looking for to push us past that. We still need serious help on the defensive line, some real playmakers to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. And another reliable target for Herbert, especially if we’re trying to compete in a stacked AFC. What I want to see next is a veteran defensive end, someone who can disrupt the backfield, someone who brings that dog mentality. This Trey Lance move? It's fine, I guess. It’s not exciting, it’s not infuriating, it’s just… there. It doesn’t change my expectations for next season much, except maybe to add a slight shrug.

The Bolts aren't waiting for permission to belong here. Devon Nakamura-Ellis, Los Angeles.
