Another overtime, another heartbreaker. You know, you go to bed thinking maybe, just maybe, they pull it off, and then you wake up and it’s still the same knot in your stomach. The Montreal Canadiens fought hard last night at the Bell Centre, but it wasn't enough, losing 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime. We saw Mike Matheson tie it up in the first period, after a quick response from the Hurricanes following their opening goal. Then, Lane Hutson, *le p'tit génie*, on the power play in the second, made us all believe. Thirty-eight shots, *tabarnac*, and only two goals. Sam Montembeault stood on his head, making 35 saves against the Hurricanes' 38 shots. It's tough when your goalie is your best player, but you still lose.
The turning point was undoubtedly that overtime goal from Andrei Svechnikov. It felt like a punch to the gut, coming after all that effort. You look at the shots, 38-13, and you think, how do you not win that game? Our boys had the puck, they were pressing, but Carolina just knows how to capitalize on those chances. Sean Gostisbehere and Tyler Hall scored for them in regulation, and while Matheson and Hutson answered for Montreal, we just couldn't find that third one. Joel Armia had a couple of good looks, but it just wasn't bouncing our way. It's a cruel game sometimes, non?
What does this mean for the Montreal Canadiens moving forward? Well, we’re still sitting third in the Atlantic with 106 points, but every point matters. We’ve been playing well lately, 7-3-0 in our last ten, but a loss is a loss, and it stings, especially at home. We needed those two points, but we only got one. The push for the playoffs is real, and every point against a strong team like the Carolina Hurricanes is important. The Bell Centre was buzzing, even after the loss, but you could feel the collective sigh of disappointment heading out onto René Lévesque. We gotta regroup, and fast.
