Your summer plans might include 10 new tents in Ward 3.

Your summer plans might include some extra tents, Ottawa

Bon matin, Ottawa. Simone Okafor-Bouchard here, bringing you the latest from my desk, just off the Hill. We're seeing some interesting movements in the permit office this week, and it's making me think about summer in the city.

The City of Ottawa issued two permits, BP 3TEN 26-406 and BP 3TEN 26-407, for the installation of five temporary tents each at 900 Eglinton Avenue East. Both permits, issued to The Bani Hashi Society, are for commercial use in Ward 3. The first set of tents will be up from June 16 to June 27, 2026, with the second batch from July 26 to August 6, 2026. Each permit is valued at $6,500.

Now, Eglinton Avenue East is not exactly a stone's throw from the ByWard Market, but temporary structures like these are often a sign of community events or special programming. It's fascinating to see these plans laid out so far in advance. What could require ten temporary tents for nearly a month each, almost a year apart? This looks like a significant event, or perhaps two distinct ones, requiring substantial outdoor space. We will keep an eye on what manifests at 900 Eglinton Avenue East next summer.

The real story is never on the Hill — it's always just off it.
