Your City Hall is building for tents and townhouses

Your city hall is building for tents and townhouses

Bonjour, Ottawa! Simone Okafor-Bouchard here, giving you the real deal from City Hall, where the paper trail is often more interesting than the press conferences. The real story is never on the Hill – it's always just off it.

Let's talk about some recently issued building permits and active development applications that just crossed my desk – passed through, oh, three levels of bureaucratic review, I think.

First up, the Bani Hashi Society in Ward 3. They’ve secured *two* separate permits – BP 3TEN 26-406 and BP 3TEN 26-407 – to install five temporary tents each, at 900 Eglinton Ave E. One set is for June 16 to June 27, 2026, and the other for July 26 to August 6, 2026. Each permit costs $6,500. It’s always fascinating to see how even temporary structures need formal approval, eh? It’s not just throwing up a tent in the backyard, this is proper commercial planning.

Meanwhile, on the development front, Ward 11 is looking at a new townhouse development, Application SP 25 67, covering 376, 390 Derry Rd W and 0 Oaktree Circle. It’s currently "Application in Process." This continues the trend we've been watching, where the city is trying to address housing density, moving away from the old sprawl model.

* **Bani Hashi Society:** Two permits for five temporary tents each at 900 Eglinton Ave E, Ward 3. Dates are specific: June 16-27, 2026 and July 26-August 6, 2026. Total cost $13,000. * **Townhouse Development:** App SP 25 67 in Ward 11, at 376, 390 Derry Rd W and 0 Oaktree Circle. Currently "Application in Process."

These permits and applications, straight from City Hall’s recent releases, show the constant, often invisible, hum of development shaping our city, from community events to new housing. We'll be watching to see how these applications move through the approval process and what impact these new structures will have on their respective communities.
