Your city is building more housing and that's good
Bonjour Ottawa, Simone Okafor-Bouchard here, giving you the real deal from City Hall, because the real story is never on the Hill — it's always just off it. We're looking at the latest building permits and development applications, and what I’m seeing is a continued push for more housing, *surtout* residential.
The big one that caught my eye from the issued building permits is in Ward 1, right near Queen Street West. A new two-storey detached dwelling with three units is going up at 13 Queen St W, valued at $1,381,160. That's a significant investment, making a dent in the housing crunch. And in Ward 9, at 2770 Aquitaine Ave, they're converting an existing guest suite into a residential one for $48,750. Every little bit helps, no?
Here's the breakdown:
* **New Housing:** Ward 1 sees a substantial new build with three units. * **Residential Conversions:** Ward 9 is making existing spaces work harder for housing. * **Industrial Updates:** Not all residential, though; Sunbelt Film & TV in Ward 5 is upgrading washrooms, a $60,465 job.
Looking at active development applications, Ward 8 is set for a residential apartment building at 1970 and 1980 Fowler Drive. This is currently "Application in Process," as is a townhouse development in Ward 11 at 376, 390 Derry Rd W. It shows the city is still actively processing and approving denser housing projects, which is exactly what we need to see.
What does this mean for you, whether you’re in the Glebe or Hintonburg? More housing options, eventually. We’ll be watching to see how quickly these applications move from "in process" to actual shovels in the ground.
