Philly restaurants want to add 20% during the 2026 World Cup

You won't believe what our restaurants are gonna do

Listen, you know how we do it here in Philly. We're always trying to figure out how to keep this city vibrant, how to get people to come through and spend their wooder ice money. So when I heard about this jawn, I had to bring it to your attention. Remember that World Cup coming to town in 2026? Yeah, that one. Our local restaurants are talkin' about adding a 20% service charge during those weeks. I'm not even gonna hold you, my first thought was "What in the Wawa is goin' on here?"

This isn't a requirement, mind you, just a recommendation they're tossin' around. But imagine you're down on Passyunk Avenue, trying to get a nice dinner, or maybe you're up in Fishtown hitting one of those new breweries, and then BAM — an extra twenty percent for just existing during the World Cup. On one hand, I get it. The city is gonna be packed, people from all over the world are gonna be here, and our restaurants work hard. My auntie used to work down at Reading Terminal Market, so I know the grind is real. They wanna make sure they're taking care of their people, especially with gas prices doing what they do right now.

* **What This Means for Philadelphia** * Could help local businesses and workers capitalize on the huge influx of tourists. * Might make some locals side-eye their dinner bill during the World Cup. * Could set a precedent for other big events coming to the city.

But on the other hand, we already got a reputation, or nah? You want people to come back to South Street or hit up 52nd Street to check out the real Philly, and then they get hit with a surprise charge? It’s a tough jawn to balance, trying to make sure our businesses thrive without making folks feel like they're getting played. That's the jawn, Philly — we don't do fake out here.
