Your Sydney flight lands late. Now what?

You won't believe what our visitors are asking about

Good morning from the Cape — the fiddle's tuned, the stories are ready, and Cape Breton's still here. Let's go, b'y.

Now listen here, I got a message from a visitor, some good soul planning to come in the fall. They're landing late at night at the Sydney airport, near the Grand Lake Road, see, and they're wondering how in the blazes they're going to get to their hotel downtown, maybe near the waterfront boardwalk, because the car rental counters will be closed. And me heart just aches a wee bit, because it's a question that tells you a lot about our island and how we get by, isn't it? It's the kind of thing that makes you scratch your head and say, 'only in Cape Breton.'

### Getting Around Our Island

It's a genuine quandary, isn't it? Midnight on a Tuesday, your flight from Toronto or Halifax just landed, and you're out there at JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport and you're thinking, 'Now what?' It’s not like bigger cities where there’s a whole fleet of taxis lined up or a bus running every fifteen minutes. We’re a bit more... *resourceful* here, you know? It’s not a complaint, just a fact of life on the Cape. It means you gotta plan a bit more, maybe make a few calls ahead of time.

Here's what I told them, and what anyone else landing late ought to know:

* **Pre-book a taxi:** This is your best bet, b'y. Call one of the local companies from Sydney — like City Wide or Dynasty Taxi — *before* you even leave your house. Tell them your flight number and landing time. They'll know to be there. * **Hotel shuttle (if available):** Some of the bigger hotels, especially those catering to business travellers or cruise ship passengers, might have a shuttle service. Always worth checking when you book your room. * **No public transit at that hour:** Don't even think about it. Our Cape Breton Transit system is some good for daytime, but it shuts down well before midnight, especially out by the airport.

What this means for Sydney is we’re still working on those vital connections. For all the beauty of the Cabot Trail and the Fortress of Louisbourg, sometimes the simple logistics can be a bit of a hurdle. It's a reminder that while we're some proud of our unique way of life, we also want to make it easy for folks to come and experience it. We want you to see the Big Fiddle and walk the boardwalk, not be stranded by the runway, now do we?

The crew on the MiTL morning show are talking about all this and more, you should check them out at mornings.live.
