Your joyride to Hope at 180 km/h was really something

Your joyride to Chilliwack was really something

You know, every time the sun decides to show its face after a week of that deep, bone-soaking rain we get out here, I swear half the city gets this collective jolt of *ikigai* and the other half… well, they decide to do something monumentally stupid. And this week, it seems a certain Abbotsford youth took that urge and drove it straight into a dump truck, at 180 kilometers an hour, no less. In his stepmom's BMW. With friends in the car. Just to get to Hope, presumably, which is usually a destination, not a speed limit. It’s hard to imagine the thought process that leads to that kind of decision, tearing down the Trans-Canada like it’s a personal racetrack, but then again, I’ve seen some wild things happen on the Granville Strip on a Saturday night. The police releasing the video is a nice touch, a little *memento mori* for anyone else thinking their BMW is a substitute for a brain.

It’s one thing to drive too fast past the blueberry fields in the Valley, but this isn't some quiet country road. This is the main artery, the lifeline connecting us to… well, everything east of Langley. The audacity of it, the sheer recklessness, it’s almost poetic in its idiocy. And the "Don't kill us, brah" plea? That's the kind of dialogue you hear in a bad B-movie, not something you’d expect from a real-life joyride that could have, and probably should have, ended much worse. You can almost see the reflection of the North Shore mountains in the rearview mirror, mocking the whole scene with their stoic beauty.

Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.

You know, the morning crew always has a good take on the wild stuff happening out here — catch it live at mornings.live.
