Your West End view just changed forever on Barclay Street.

Your West End View Is About To Change

Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.

Council just voted to approve a new CD-1 rezoning at 2028-2038 Barclay Street, right there in the West End. This passed with a unanimous vote from all councillors present: Mayor Sim, along with Councillors Klassen, Meiszner, Zhou, and Bligh, all voted in favour on March 12th. For those who aren't constantly checking the city's public hearing records, CD-1 means Comprehensive Development. It’s essentially a custom zoning for a specific site, allowing for more tailored projects than standard residential or commercial zones.

What this means on the ground is a new building, likely denser than what’s currently there, which will definitely change the light and sightlines for folks in that neighbourhood. The West End already has its share of shadows from older high-rises, and any new development, especially one with a custom zoning, gets a lot of scrutiny. It's about finding that balance, isn't it? More housing, or keeping the sky open?

We'll be watching what kind of permits roll out for this one in the coming months, and what it means for the character of that stretch of Barclay.
