Your West End just got a new tower on Barclay Street

Your West End street just got a little taller

Alright, Vancouver. The rain's holding off this morning, sun trying to peek through over the North Shore. Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.

What's complicated this week? Well, the City Council, specifically Mayor K. Sim and Councillors M. Klassen, P. Meiszner, L. Zhou, and R. Bligh, all voted in favour of the CD-1 Rezoning for 2028-2038 Barclay Street on March 12th. That's a Public Hearing item, meaning it's been discussed, and now it's carried. For those of us who live or commute through the West End, Barclay Street is already seeing a lot of change. This vote paves the way for a new development in a neighbourhood already feeling the squeeze.

Then there are the building permits. On March 20th, we saw a couple of notable ones issued. There's $110,000 going into interior alterations at 609 Granville Street, and another $150,000 for upgrades at 1199 Marinaside Crescent. These are smaller, internal changes, not massive new towers, but they speak to the continuous churn of property here. It's that constant hum of things being refitted, improved, ready for the next iteration.

The Barclay Street rezoning feels like another step in a familiar direction for Vancouver. It's worth keeping an eye on how these changes affect the existing community, the flow of people, and those classic West End walk-ups.
