Your council just changed Barclay Street forever.

What your city hall just approved on Barclay Street

Good morning, Vancouver. Kenji Nakashima here, on the Morning Wire. Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.

Council was busy on March 12th, and what they did on Barclay Street in the West End is worth a look. According to the recent council votes, the rezoning at 2028-2038 Barclay Street, a CD-1 rezoning, was carried. Mayor Ken Sim, along with Councillors Mike Klassen, Peter Meiszner, Lisa Zhou, and Rebecca Bligh, all voted in favour. This isn't just a paperwork shuffle; a CD-1 rezoning allows for custom zoning, often paving the way for larger or more complex developments than standard zoning permits.

This area, just a few blocks from the buzz of Robson Street and the quiet calm of Nelson Park, is always shifting. A rezoning like this means a significant change is coming to that corner of the West End. We’ve seen this pattern before, and it usually means increased density, which, depending on who you ask, is either a necessary step or another chip away at the neighbourhood's character.

What does it mean for you? Well, keep an eye on Barclay Street. These council decisions often set the stage for the skyline we'll be living with tomorrow.
